The Texas Stampede Foundation would like to recognize Joseph Castillo. Joseph or as many of his friends know him as Chill recently made a donation to the foundation of a rugby chair. Says Castillo “I was so fortunate to have a friend lend me their chair until I could get a grant to help with this chair. 7 years later I filled out a application for a new chair and I was blessed with a yes and now I have the opportunity to pay it forward, please don't waste time”.
“Donations like these are common for the foundation. We accept chairs that are ready to move on to the next owner”. Executive Director James Gumbert explains. “So many times we get new players that come out to practices and we don’t have anything to put them in. Part of the foundations mission is to make sure that new players have the opportunity to play sport”.
Castillo’s story is like many that have just been introduced to adaptive sport. He recalls, “Seven years ago when I 1st started this sport I had no passion to play sport again, and after a decade of support groups I met a wide range of people with physical challenges, these same people were playing rugby, soccer, softball, football and boccia, track and field. There were actual sports that I could play and have a impact at the same time. So I tried soccer and the sports chair had no dump in it, i was actually holding on with one hand for dear life... another quad approached me Juan was his name and he saw the discomfort I was in and suggested a rugby chair, my first reaction was I didn't want to break a leg, especially mine... but Juan and Robert were persistent and finally got me in a rugby chair and I didn't have to hold on for the fear of falling over... after that first practice I was hooked.”
Stories like Joseph’s are common in the adaptive sport world. The Texas Stampede Foundation was built on the idea of being able to get people active and involved in adaptive sports.
