The Texas Stampede Foundation received a donation from Stampede athlete Daniel Curtis this week. Curtis who is a current athlete and philanthropist for the team, heads his own fundraiser “Pay it Forward” made the generous donation. “Wheelchair rugby and the Texas Stampede have been one of the best conduits with regards to my transition back to normal life”, said Curtis
“There is no better transition tool from such a traumatic injury back into the real world then the community that is wheelchair rugby. I spent hundreds of hours working with healthcare professionals. They taught me so much about my injury. However, within six months of joining the Texas Stampede I had learned tips and tricks around being a quad that just can’t be taught in rehab. I had conversations around bowel and bladder management, sexuality, travel, REAL LIFE!… that were not really possible in a medical setting. hands-down, the best rehab for me was found on and off the court with my teammates” Curtis went on to say.
“Daniel has always been somebody looking to improve himself not just on the court but off the court as well said executive director James Gumbert. In my years of leadership I have rarely seen anyone give back as much as Daniel has”.
“With my background in hotel food and beverage management, I’ve been given an incredible opportunity to continue to raise money beyond my medical expenses and to help those in need. Over the years I’ve come to see that some of the best money spent is on Adapted sport. A quad rugby chair is upwards to $6000. Add onto that, tubes, tires, tape, travel, uniforms, gym rental, The list goes on. None of this money is being wasted! All of this money is being invested in individuals who have met one of life‘s greatest possible challenges and choose to continue not only to survive… But to thrive.”
“Curtis’s “Pay it Forward” annual fundraiser is just one of the ways that he continues to work in the community and gives back. His dedication to helping others is inspiring to us all”, said Gumbert. “This donation will help to improve the lives and resources for athletes in the adaptive world. It will definitely make a difference”.
